NEW ZEALAND’S Auckland International Airport has been installed with Sagem Sécurité’s SmartGate automated facial recognition border control system.

The launch of SmartGate is a first step of a long term partnership between New Zealand Customs Service and Sagem Sécurité for the implementation of improved border control solutions.

According to Sagem Securite, the recognition border control system identifies travellers in real time using facial recognition from the photo stored in the chip of the ePassport found in New Zealand and Australian passports.

“SmartGate is a welcome initiative that will improve the efficiency of trans-Tasman air travel, particularly for frequent flyers,” New Zealand Customs Service comptroller, Martyn Dunne says.

Sagem Secruite claims SmartGate is the same automated system already deployed in most International Australian airports which will also be rolled out in Christchurch and Wellington International airports by mid 2010.
