Govt calls on private security industry to lift its standards

THE FEDERAL Government has called on the security industry to ‘lift standards’ following corruption allegations against a security industry training company.

An NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) inquiry revealed Roger Training Academy had issued licences and first aid certificates to security officers without proper training.

At a recent security event, Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland said the very nature of the industry, with access to money, guns, licensed premises and major events provided an incentive for criminal infiltration.

The Australian Crime Commission (ACC) had also identified issues of criminality affecting the industry, principally exploitation of the cash economy and unlawful business practices.

The government insisted the industry must remove criminal elements and improve the competence of security personnel.
