THE Attorney-General, Robert McClelland has launched Australia’s first comprehensive cyber security strategy and a computer emergency response team, CERT Australia.

The new strategy will commence operations in January and will work with the Cyber Security Operations Centre (CSOC) as part of the Defence White Paper.

McClelland says the cyber security strategy will help boost cyber security for economic institutions, critical infrastructure, government agencies, businesses and home users.

“CERT Australia will work with other national CERTs around the world, the IT industry and Australian internet service providers to help network operators to identify and respond to cyber security incidents,” he says.

Other priorities of the strategies include educating Australians about cyber threats, model best practices in the protection of government ICT systems and promote the development of a skilled cyber security workforce to develop innovative solutions.

“This strategy will help to make sure that people understand the simple things they can do to stay smart online and become empowered participants in the online environment,” Senator Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy says.
