CISCO has warned in its 2009 Annual Security Report social networking sites are increasingly creating playgrounds for more cybercriminals.

“Social networks have quickly become a playground for cybercriminals because members of these sites put an inordinate amount of trust in the other members of their communities and often fail to take precautions to prevent the spread of malware and computer viruses,” Cisco says.

Despite the rise of social media threats, spam is still the top ranking form of cyber-threats.

The Annual Security reports that up to 90% of untargeted spam, delivered by botnets floods inboxes with messages from supposed banks, educational institutions, and service providers.

According to Cisco, spam volumes will rise from 30 to 40% worldwide next year.

Cisco’s Annual Security Report also indicated politically-motivated threats are increasing, while governments are teaming up and promoting online security.
