Biometric SmartGate to launch late 2009 to enhance border protection

FROM the end of 2009, New Zealanders and Australians with electronic passports may have the option of using SmartGate to get through customs quickly.

With SmartGate, an individual’s image is checked against the biometric identity data chip in their e-passport.

According to New Zealand Customs Minister Maurice Williamson, the technology will pinpoint multiple points on the cheekbones, nose and eye.

Under new immigration legislation making its way through parliament on Tuesday, anyone arriving in New Zealand will be required to provide biometric data.
